New hip and feeling great

I am 53 years old and five days post total hip replacement. I am feeling great and hope to be off my walker and onto a cane next week. Sticking to my exercises and icing hip several times a day. I was one that waited way to long to address the problem but extremely happy now. I hope all new hipsters feel as good as I do.
Take Care

Snow sking after surgery

Hi ,

I have been told I need a hip replacement, I am 62. I have read about a dentist who started a steel hipster club for people who skied after hip surgery. Is anyone a member or know of someone who was a member of that club?

RTHR on 12/06/2016

Little more than four years later I am about to undergo second THR.  This time it will be anterior/lateral approach with a different surgeon than first.  I am very hopeful recovery will be less complicated.  In the end I have been very satisfied with first surgery and have no question this one is needed.  I will post more about comparison of two as recovery progresses.

Wow I Never Thought That Would Happen to Me!

Hello Everyone,

In 2012 at age 52 I was diagnosis with severe osteoarthritis. Wow, I never thought that would happen to me. I retired from the A.N.G in 2010 after 26 years of Military Service as a full time Jet Engine Mechanic. My job was on the flight line trouble shooting engine problems on the F-16 Fighter Jet. It was a great job!.

When I retired I thought life was going to be great. I was in the best shape of my life at age 50. During my career in the Military I also had…

Only 3 weeks post-op

Just joined the hipsters tonight.
Next week back to work.
I'm going to ask an awkward question -
Been using a raised toilet seat with arms at home. Does it put you at risk to use a lower seat? Seems like I'll overdo the 90 degree angle. ( can't believe this is my first post - oh well)

My early experience

Hello friends, I am 43 years old was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis. I had my surgery on my left hip January 14th 2013 and am recovering well. I am currently 25 days out of surgery and am almost ready to walk without my cain. I have a little soreness mostly from walking more often but no real pain. I was astonished how quick and easy my surgery went. It lasted just over an hour and recovery was a little difficult but easier since I have a lot of upper body strength.I was in the ortho…

new to the hipster club

Hi everyone,

I am so very happy that I found this web site and that I am now a member of the HIPSTER club.

I am 54 and scheduled for total right hip replacement on Aug 21.  I am to the point that i wish that the surgery was tomorrow.

I am a pharmacy tech and had to cut my work schedule down to 4 6 hour days instead of 4 10 hour days.  The pain from bending and standing was getting to be to much.

I am not worried about having surgery. I am worried about after at…

Terrified about my surgery

I am 57, divorced very active in sports, with a 15 year old at home.  I have hip arthritis and was doing okay with shots for a year. However, although the last one worked, I can read the writing on the wall and see its not working quite as well.  I went for a second opinion and the xray showed spurs, bone on bone and a loose floating body around the joint.I find myself not getting up as much as groaning when the doorbell rings and I have to stand.   I am getting the surgery next…

New to the Hipster Scene

Hi Fellow Hipsters,

I'm very excited to join this blog. As a 56 year old woman from Sydney who lives up 38 steps with a fluffy cat called Mishka and a Left Hip thats crying out for a Hip Op, I'm discovering the best way to learn is from other Hipsters.

I too have been getting all sorts of messages about Anterior and Posterior.  The Surgeon I have landed says he can do both and makes an individual assessment.   He says there's not much between them.  But others I know swear by…

Showering after surgery

Hi....my left hip will be replaced in 2 weeks....while in the shower this morning I realized how difficult it is to wash and dry my feet, but I can do it through the pain.  It made me wonder just how in the world I can do that right after surgery if I cannot bend over?   What tips do others have for washing/showering after surgery?

My "hip" journey

Last year on April 12,2012 my left hip was replaced using the anterior approach (front of upper thigh). Everything went really well and I had a relatively easy recovery with minimal pain and no restrictions on activities. So the type of surgery was everything it was touted to be - it almost sounds too good to be true! Well, as it turned out it was

- about three weeks after the surgery I developed a DVT from my groin to my calf in my surgery leg. I was scheduled to have my right hip… Continue

about to start post op week #2

The surgery week was wretched put put it mildly with unexpected blood loss, delay getting transfusion that caused delay to start PT, massively draining 10 inch incision, bladder spasms, fluid overload (only item not on the list was the intractable grinding bone pain.  I was pretty despairing, but my situation with rapidly decreasing mobility made it a no brainer.  I was amazed and gratified that all of that stopped by end of the week.  Got the transfusion, peed gallons and fluid overload…

Less than a week away....

My surgery is a week from today.  I am off Ibuprofen which had become my friend.  My doctor prescribed Tramadol and the initial dosage is definitely not cutting it.  I have been in a lot of pain all day.   I called the doctor's office today and got the ok to double the dosage.  I'm hoping I will get some relief soon.

Airport security

Last summer I was detained, and examined  (Ottawa and Atlanta airports ) because my hip caused the detector  to go off.  Doc says a note would not have helped, since a potential terrorist could also have an artificial  hip ..

I am about to recieve a double hip replacement, one on January 10th and the second on Jan 13.

A little history, I had slipped epiphysis of both hips at age 13, now I am 54, so I have had hip problems for 40 years now.

I have no rotation and very little movement, and the pain has gotten severe, I am just ready to have it over with, I cant sit for long times, and i drive for a living, i cant even walk the dog anymore.

Because of my pins I can't have the anterior or less…
